Brentford’s five-match away losing streak now feels like a distant memory after they claimed back-to-back Premier League victories on the road, sweeping past Everton 4-2 thanks to a superb hat-trick from Igor Thiago.

Travelling had been a recurring problem for Brentford this season, and that may have contributed to their sluggish opening. The visitors were fortunate to remain level inside the first 10 minutes when former Bee James Tarkowski saw his powerful header from a corner cleared off the line by Thiago.

The two were involved again soon after, but this time the outcome favoured Brentford. Tarkowski’s loose pass was seized upon by Vitaly Janelt, who picked out an unmarked Thiago to calmly steer the ball into the bottom corner.

Everton struggled to offer much going forward in the first half, with their lack of cutting edge summed up when Tim Iroegbunam scuffed a tame effort wide from a promising position. Even the return of Jack Grealish failed to spark the hosts into life, and they were relieved to reach half-time only one goal down.

Kevin Schade and Thiago both forced Jordan Pickford into sharp reflex saves late in the half, preventing further damage but doing little to silence the boos that greeted the interval at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

David Moyes responded with a double substitution at the break, introducing Beto and Merlin Röhl. However, before either could influence proceedings, Everton found themselves two goals adrift as Nathan Collins rose highest to power home Janelt’s pinpoint corner.

Moments later, the stadium began to empty as Brentford effectively put the contest beyond doubt. Everton were caught napping on the edge of their own area, allowing Thiago to dink the ball over Pickford and complete his brace.

The Toffees briefly threatened a comeback when Beto headed home Grealish’s dangerous in-swinging cross in the 66th minute, and Everton pushed with renewed urgency in the closing stages in search of a route back into the match.

Ultimately, though, they had left themselves too much to do, extending their winless run to four matches. Brentford, by contrast, continued their rise up the table, leapfrogging Everton to move into the top seven. Thiago capped a memorable individual display by delicately lifting the ball over Pickford to seal his hat-trick late on, even if Thierno Barry’s late strike offered a minor blemish on an otherwise impressive afternoon.
