Ben Davies scored his first Premier League goal since December 2023, but it proved insufficient as Tottenham Hotspur were held to a 1-1 draw at home by a spirited Sunderland side. Despite the result, Spurs extended their unbeaten head-to-head run against the Black Cats to 15 matches.

Tottenham started on the front foot, with Mathys Tel firing off a shot inside the opening minute. The hosts maintained early pressure, though Sunderland quickly showed their defensive resilience. Pedro Porro attempted an ambitious effort that drifted harmlessly wide, while Richarlison saw a tame strike comfortably gathered by Robin Roefs.

Thomas Frank suffered an early setback when Mohammed Kudus was forced off injured just 19 minutes into the contest. Spurs continued to create the clearer chances following his departure, and their breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark. From a corner, Cristian Romero brought the ball down and fed Micky van de Ven, whose effort was nudged over the line by Davies, making his first start of the season count.

Sunderland searched for an immediate response before the break, but Van de Ven blocked Enzo Le Fée’s long-range effort and Trai Hume fired over from distance.

The visitors emerged with renewed belief after the interval, forcing Guglielmo Vicario into action just four minutes after the restart as he denied Eliezer Mayenda’s header. A loose pass from Romero soon led to further danger, with Davies diverting Brian Brobbey’s strike into the side netting. Simon Adingra then went close, guiding his effort narrowly wide as Sunderland’s confidence grew.

At the other end, Randal Kolo Muani tested Roefs from a tight angle following a rapid counter-attack, but a sense of tension continued to build inside the stadium. That feeling was justified when Le Fée headed against the post before combining with Brobbey moments later, the Dutch striker rifling an emphatic finish past Vicario with nine minutes remaining.

Hume went close to a dramatic winner soon after, forcing Vicario to tip his effort over the bar, while tempers flared late on amid a frantic finale. Sunderland extended their unbeaten run to five matches, while Spurs’ own three-game unbeaten streak felt far less rewarding after surrendering another lead.
