It may not have been a total shock that Manchester United left Anfield victorious for the first time in nearly ten years, given their unbeaten run in the last five encounters across all competitions. Yet the Red Devils had not claimed a league win at Liverpool since August 2022.

Underdogs Against the Odds

Coming off a win over Sunderland in their previous Premier League outing, United faced a formidable Liverpool side that had outscored them in recent matches, netting 14 goals while conceding only four in those encounters. Ruben Amorim’s squad had the chance to finally string together back-to-back wins in the league—but the odds were stacked against them.

When the line-ups were announced, the away fans groaned as Amorim opted to drop Leny Yoro in favor of Liverpool veteran Harry Maguire. Matheus Cunha came in for Benjamin Sesko, while Liverpool fielded an unchanged squad from their defeat to Chelsea.

Milestones and Debuts

The game featured Giorgi Mamardashvili making his Anfield Premier League debut—the first Liverpool player to do so since Thiago Alcantara in January 2021. For United, Bruno Fernandes marked his 100th Premier League away appearance at Anfield, a ground where he had yet to secure a league win (P4 W0 D2 L2).

A Calamitous Start for Liverpool

The hosts were stunned almost immediately, falling behind after just 62 seconds. Bryan Mbeumo’s lightning-quick goal—the fastest in the 2025/26 Premier League season and the earliest in this fixture since 1995—sent shockwaves through the Kop.

Liverpool’s history of struggling when conceding first was evident: they hadn’t won any of their last four matches after going behind. Conceding their third goal within 15 minutes this season highlighted defensive concerns for manager Arne Slot.

Despite dominating possession—over 65% in the opening half-hour—Liverpool remained vulnerable to United’s counterattacks. Both Fernandes and Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork early, while United registered three shots on target in the first 30 minutes—their most in the opening half since April 2024 against Crystal Palace.

United’s Attack Shines

United’s front three of Cunha, Mbeumo, and Mason Mount were the more threatening force, even as Liverpool delivered 19 crosses by halftime. Remarkably, United led at the break—their first half-time advantage at Anfield since the 2014/15 season under Louis van Gaal. Historically, United had never lost at Anfield in the Premier League when leading at halftime (W6 D2), and they remained unbeaten in their last 10 EPL matches in which they led at the break (W9 D1).

Liverpool Push Back

The second half saw Gakpo strike the woodwork again, and while Mohamed Salah had five chances to score, he failed to convert any—more than the entire United team combined. Substitutions after the hour mark re-energized Liverpool, and eventually, the pressure paid off. Gakpo netted an equalizer with 13 minutes remaining, making him the only Liverpool player to score in his first three starts against United.

Maguire Seals the Victory

Rather than crumble, United responded. After sustained pressure and a corner that Liverpool failed to clear, Harry Maguire rose to head the ball into the net, restoring United’s lead. Maguire’s performance was exemplary: ten one-on-one duels won, nine aerial battles, four recoveries, and joint-highest touches in the opposition box alongside Mbeumo and Cunha.

Liverpool’s defensive woes continued, with the Red Devils’ fifth goal marking the eighth time in their last 12 Premier League matches that they had conceded two or more goals—more than any other team.

Salah Struggles, Lammens Shines

Salah was substituted after a frustrating outing, extending his goalless streak to seven consecutive Premier League games without a non-penalty goal—a first in his Liverpool career. Despite dominating possession in the final 15 minutes (78.9%), Liverpool could not find the equalizer.

United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was crucial, saving five of six shots and matching Cunha with the highest number of touches (55), solidifying his claim to a regular starting role.

For Liverpool, the defeat ended their scoring streak at 42 consecutive Premier League games—a remarkable run that offered little consolation amid a fourth consecutive loss in all competitions and three straight league defeats for the first time since February 2021.
