’The real season begins now’: Guardiola eyes Arsenal ahead of Newcastle clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed his squad will travel to Newcastle United on Saturday almost at full strength.
City arrive at St James’ Park on the back of consecutive Premier League wins, sitting second in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
On his squad’s fitness, Guardiola said with a smile:
“Everybody is fit except Kova (Mateo Kovacic) and Rodri. Rodri is making good steps—it’s almost three weeks since his last minor setback. We must allow him proper recovery, both physically and mentally, to ensure consistency for the rest of the season.”
International Success
It has been a strong week for City internationals. Nico O’Reilly made a successful England debut, while Erling Haaland helped Norway secure World Cup qualification.
On Haaland, Guardiola praised his record-breaking form:
“He’s incredible this season, breaking all sorts of records for both club and country. For Norway, many of the squad weren’t even born the last time they were in the World Cup. He’s a world-class player who deserves this experience, and I’m so happy for him.”
Speaking on O’Reilly, Guardiola added:
“I’m delighted for him. Hopefully he stays humble and stable at this age. It’s also a huge compliment to our academy and everyone involved in his development.”
However, there was a setback for goalkeeper Gigio Donnarumma, as Italy now face a World Cup playoff. Guardiola remains supportive:
“Gigio started at 17 with Milan because he’s special. He’ll learn from this experience—every player grows through setbacks.”
Newcastle Challenge
City face a Newcastle side that has struggled for consistency in the league, but Guardiola is wary of underestimating them:
“Top, top team—they’re a Champions League-quality squad, but we’re ready.”
He also praised Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes:
“Not just this season, but for many years since Lyon, we realized he was special. Newcastle made an incredible signing, and he keeps improving. I’ve always been a big fan.”
Chasing Arsenal
On the title race, Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal’s strength:
“They’re a very strong team and probably won’t drop many points. But it’s November—nothing is final. What happens in February or March will be key. Now the real season starts. Winning tomorrow would be an important step.”
Reflecting on the recent international break, he said:
“I like the break… it gives time to breathe, though with a World Cup in winter, we’ve adapted. Whatever the decisions of the big brains in world football, we adjust.”
Stars of the Season
Guardiola also highlighted the impact of club captain Bernardo Silva:
“One of the best—he gives everything, on and off the stats, especially his mentality. Absolutely one of the best players I’ve ever trained.”
At the other end of the spectrum, he praised young goalkeeper James Trafford amid speculation over a January move:
“We have incredible keepers in Gigio and James. I’ve been very impressed by James’ development since leaving our academy.”
