The Numbers Behind a Titanic Champions League Battle: Bayern vs PSG

Tuesday night sees Bayern Munich travel to the Parc des Princes to face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.
This is a fixture that has become a familiar feature of Europe’s elite competition, much like Real Madrid vs Manchester City, with the German and French giants meeting nine times over the past nine seasons and 15 times in total.
Luis Enrique could make Champions League history
Bayern have dominated the recent head-to-head record, winning the last five meetings in the competition. If Vincent Kompany guides his side to victory on Tuesday, it would mark his third consecutive win over Luis Enrique in the Champions League — the most any manager has achieved against the Spaniard in the tournament.
However, Luis Enrique also has the opportunity to write his own piece of Champions League history if his team come out on top.
Currently, Pep Guardiola holds the record for the fastest coach to reach 50 wins in the Champions League, achieving the milestone in 80 matches.
That landmark was set in 2015 — the same year Luis Enrique lifted the Champions League trophy with Barcelona — in a match against Dinamo Zagreb, while Guardiola was in charge of Bayern Munich.
However, if PSG manage to beat Bayern, Enrique — a former Barcelona colleague of Guardiola — would reach the same 50-win milestone in just 76 games, four fewer than Guardiola.
Bayern’s strong record against PSG
Bayern’s five-match winning streak over PSG is already the longest any side has recorded against the French champions, and their dominance adds extra weight to the upcoming two-legged tie.
In fact, PSG have lost 60% of their encounters with Bayern (nine defeats in 15 meetings), which is their highest loss rate against any opponent they have faced at least three times in the Champions League.
Vincent Kompany’s side may not be able to approach the game in their usual attacking manner, with PSG having scored at least two goals in each of their last eight Champions League knockout matches.
Interestingly, the only other team to achieve a similar run was also managed by Luis Enrique, during his time in charge of Barcelona between 2015 and 2016.
Goals expected in a high-scoring tie
Both Bayern Munich and PSG have scored 38 goals each in this season’s Champions League, making them the competition’s joint top scorers. This suggests the upcoming clash could turn into a thrilling, open contest if both sides commit to attacking from the outset.
Harry Kane remains the key threat for Bayern to manage, with the England striker scoring 12 goals in the 2025/26 campaign — the most ever scored by an English player in a single Champions League season.
Harry Kane has scored in each of his last four Champions League knockout matches, and if he finds the net again, he will match Robert Lewandowski’s Bayern Munich record of scoring in five consecutive knockout-stage games.
Luis Díaz has also impressed in Europe this season, and if he registers another goal contribution on Tuesday night (currently on six goals and three assists), it would mark the first time in Bayern’s history that three players have each recorded at least 10 goal contributions in a single Champions League campaign. Kane already has 13, while Michael Olise has reached 10.
Vitinha set to control the game again?
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has also been a major attacking force, with 13 goal contributions so far — eight goals (the highest for PSG) and five assists — just one short of the club record of 14 set by Ousmane Dembélé in the 2024/25 season.
For Bayern to come away with a positive result, they will need to limit the Georgian’s influence in the attacking third and prevent him from dictating the tempo in key moments.
Bayern’s players will also need to close down Vitinha and prevent him from controlling the pace and rhythm of the match.
While other players often grab the headlines, it is the Portuguese midfielder’s metronomic passing that makes PSG tick and keeps their play flowing smoothly.
So far in this season’s Champions League, he has completed an incredible 1,370 passes — the highest total ever recorded since the 2003/04 campaign.
In eight different matches, he has registered over 100 passes, with only Barcelona’s Xavi surpassing that figure more often in a single season (nine games in 2010/11).
Bayern’s strong away run continues
Bayern are currently on a 16-match unbeaten run away from home in all competitions.
Vitinha is also among six PSG players to have recorded double figures for line-breaking passes in the 2025/26 Champions League campaign, while Joshua Kimmich is the only Bayern player to reach that milestone, with 19.
If Marquinhos is selected, he will move level with Roberto Carlos on 120 Champions League appearances — the most by a Brazilian player. Only Lionel Messi, with 163 appearances, has played more in the competition among South American players.
He’ll need to be at his best as Bayern will go looking to extend their current 16-match unbeaten streak away from home, though PSG have a formidable UCL home record to protect, given that they’ve lost just once in Paris this season, drawing two and winning the other four matches.
A titanic European battle awaits…
