Roger Federer is set to return to the scene of some of his most memorable victories in January, headlining a “Battle of the World No.1s” to officially launch the 2026 Australian Open, organisers announced Friday.

The Swiss tennis legend will step back onto Rod Laver Arena for the first time since his 2022 retirement, as Melbourne Park introduces its inaugural opening ceremony for the Grand Slam.

Scheduled for the evening before the tournament kicks off on January 18, the event will feature a special tribute to Federer, who captured the Norman Brookes Trophy six times among his 20 major titles.

Federer will also take part in a star-studded match alongside four-time Australian Open champion Andre Agassi, and fellow Australians Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.

“Thinking back to when I called the Australian Open the ‘Happy Slam’ feels like a lifetime ago, and it still brings a smile to my face remembering all the moments I’ve had there,” Federer said.

“I’ve experienced so many emotions on Rod Laver Arena — the joy of lifting the ‘Norman’ six times, the honour of playing in front of Rod Laver himself, the challenge of competing against my biggest rivals, and, always, the incredible love and support of the Australian fans.

“Coming back to win the AO in 2017 is one of my most treasured Grand Slam memories, and following it up with another victory in 2018 was another dream come true in Melbourne.”

Federer’s Australian Open victories also include 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2010, cementing his legacy as one of the tournament’s all-time greats.
