Tarxien Rainbows and Birkirkara were forced to settle for a point each after playing out a disappointing goalless draw in their penultimate Bottom Six clash.

In a match short on quality, chances and intensity, neither side did enough to merit victory as the encounter produced very little entertainment for those in attendance.

For Tarxien, the result does little to ease their relegation worries as they remain involved in the fight to avoid finishing in the bottom two places. Birkirkara, meanwhile, had little riding on the game after already securing their Premier League status.

Few Chances in Forgettable First Half

The opening period was largely uneventful, with both teams struggling to impose themselves or create meaningful opportunities.

Tarxien were forced into an early defensive reshuffle on 24 minutes when Yilson Mosquera picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Sheldon Mizzi.

The Rainbows came closest to opening the scoring when Luke Anthony Borg attempted an ambitious lob, but Birkirkara goalkeeper Miguel Martinez reacted well to prevent the effort from finding the net.

Shortly afterwards, Claudio Murici saw a shot from inside the area deflected behind for a corner as Tarxien looked the more threatening side on the counterattack.

On 31 minutes, Tarxien used their Football Video Support (FVS) card to appeal for a penalty, but the referee waved play on after judging there had been no infringement.

Birkirkara’s only notable response came through Franklin Sasere, whose attempt drifted harmlessly wide.

Tarxien Waste Best Opportunity

Birkirkara introduced Manuel Morello at the start of the second half, but Tarxien again looked the more dangerous side early after the restart, with Murici firing wide from the edge of the area.

The Stripes gradually improved and Donovan Makoma tested goalkeeper Miguel Spiteri, who dealt with the effort comfortably.

Tarxien’s injury problems continued on 52 minutes when Neil Micallef was forced off and replaced by Shaun Dimech.

Makoma later came close with a curling effort that narrowly missed the target as Birkirkara showed more attacking intent.

Tarxien used their second FVS card in another unsuccessful appeal for a penalty, with the referee once more unmoved.

The best chance of the game arrived on 72 minutes when Martinez misplaced a pass straight to Anthony Lokosa, but with the goal at his mercy, the Tarxien forward somehow sent his effort wide. It was a costly miss in a game where opportunities were extremely rare.

Birkirkara introduced Jacques Bayo and made further attacking changes late on, but failed to produce the quality needed in the final third.

Point Helps Neither Side

In the end, the match drifted to an inevitable stalemate, with both teams lacking urgency and creativity.

Tarxien may come to regret dropping two points in a fixture they needed to win, while Birkirkara will take little satisfaction from a flat display in a game that quickly faded from memory.
