Sweden’s top-ranked player Elias Ymer will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko in the first round of the men’s singles at the 2026 Australian Open.

Ymer earned his place in the main draw by navigating three qualifying rounds. The 29-year-old began with a straight-sets victory over Australia’s Alex Bolt, followed by a three-set win against Denmark’s Elmer Moller in an all-Scandinavian clash, before sealing qualification with another three-set success over Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong.

This marks the fourth time Ymer has reached the Australian Open main draw, though he has yet to progress beyond the opening round. He previously exited at the first hurdle in 2015, 2018 and 2021. Overall, this will be his ninth appearance in a Grand Slam main draw, with his sole second-round showing coming at the 2018 French Open.

Currently ranked 175th in the world, Ymer will take on world No. 104 Shevchenko when the tournament gets underway on 18 January. Shevchenko, who was born in Russia and represented his native country until switching allegiance to Kazakhstan in 2024, has yet to reach the second round in Melbourne.

Ymer does, however, hold a psychological edge, having beaten Shevchenko in straight sets in their only previous meeting on grass in Mallorca in June last year.

The pair sit in the fourth section of the draw, where seventh seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada looms as a likely third-round opponent, while 11th seed Daniil Medvedev could await in the fourth round.

In the men’s doubles, Sweden’s André Göransson and his new partner Yuki Bhambri of India have been seeded 10th and are awaiting confirmation of their first-round opponents.
