Steelers pick up Adam Thielen off Waivers, release Darius Slay

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a notable roster move on Tuesday, claiming veteran receiver Adam Thielen off waivers while releasing cornerback Darius Slay.
Thielen joins the Steelers just a day after requesting to be waived by the Minnesota Vikings, seeking more playing opportunities in what he has said will be his final NFL season.
The 35-year-old was inactive for Minnesota’s 26-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. This season, Thielen has made eight catches for 69 yards across 11 appearances, starting in just four games.
A long-time Viking, Thielen entered the league in 2013 as an undrafted free agent and spent most of his career in Minnesota, earning two Pro Bowl selections along the way. After being released by the Vikings in March 2023, he joined the Carolina Panthers for two seasons before being traded back to Minnesota in August of this year in a deal involving multiple draft picks.
Over his 173-game regular-season career, Thielen has totaled 693 catches for 8,380 yards and 64 touchdowns, starting in 132 contests.
Meanwhile, the Steelers decided to part ways with Slay, who is 34 but reportedly plans to continue his career, according to ESPN. The veteran cornerback has recorded 36 tackles and a fumble recovery over 10 games (nine starts) this season.
Over 187 career games with the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Pittsburgh, Slay has amassed 28 interceptions and 163 passes defensed. Drafted by Detroit in 2013, he earned three Pro Bowl selections there and added three more between 2021 and 2023 while with the Eagles.
There is currently no word on where Slay might continue his NFL career.
