Sorloth’s two goals lift Atlético Madrid past Oviedo, keeping pace with top two

Atlético Madrid extended their winning streak to seven matches across all competitions with a comfortable 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Real Oviedo, preserving their unbeaten league run since the opening weekend of the LaLiga season. Oviedo, meanwhile, slipped to a fourth consecutive match without finding the net.
Atlético wasted little time asserting their dominance. Just seven minutes in, Alexander Sørloth latched onto a long ball, brushed aside his marker, and unleashed a powerful strike, only to be thwarted by goalkeeper Aaron Escandell. The Norwegian forward was relentless in his pursuit of the opener, heading over from a corner before finally breaking through in the 16th minute.
Sørloth arrived perfectly to meet David Hancko’s low cross, tapping in from close range to ensure Los Colchoneros scored in their 14th straight LaLiga fixture — their longest such run to start a season since 1978.
His confidence soared from there. After trying his luck from distance, Sørloth again connected with a Hancko delivery. Although his first attempt was blocked, the rebound fell kindly, allowing him to volley past Escandell and notch his second of the night before the 25-minute mark.
Oviedo offered little in response during the first half, mustering only a routine header from Federico Viñas that Jan Oblak handled with ease. But the visitors improved after the break, enjoying their best spell of the match early in the second period. Viñas sent another header narrowly over, while Salomón Rondón and Santi Cazorla squandered promising openings. Their hopes were at least buoyed when Sørloth was substituted shortly after the hour mark.
Atlético’s attacking intensity dipped in the second half. Nico González fired straight at Escandell on a counter-attack in the 65th minute, and the hosts produced few clear chances until late on, when Giuliano Simeone and Conor Gallagher forced further saves. Still, the early damage was enough for Diego Simeone’s men to secure a 10th consecutive home win.
For Oviedo, the result prolonged a bleak run: more than two months without a victory in any competition and just seven goals scored in 14 league matches.
