Leão strike sends AC Milan past Lazio and back to the top of Serie A

AC Milan edged past SS Lazio 1–0 to extend their unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions (W9, D4), a streak that includes eight clean sheets, and moved provisionally to the top of the Serie A table.
Despite a shaky start to the season, Lazio had surged up the standings with 10 points from their previous five league outings, and they carried that confidence into San Siro. They nearly struck inside two minutes when Mario Gila met a cross with a powerful header, only for Mike Maignan to produce a sensational save, tipping the ball onto the bar to deny the visitors an early breakthrough.
The match then settled into a balanced contest. Milan preserved their record of not conceding a goal in the opening 25 minutes of league play this season, with chances limited for both sides. While the Rossoneri struggled to fashion clear openings, Maignan was again called into action in the 32nd minute, reacting sharply to block Mattia Zaccagni’s effort from a tight angle.
The home side’s attacking rhythm never truly materialised before the break. Massimiliano Allegri’s men reached half-time without registering a shot on target, and with a depleted bench, the coach had few options to spark improvement.
Lazio emerged from the interval on the front foot once more, yet it was Milan who struck first. Six minutes after the restart, a slick passing sequence ended with Fikayo Tomori delivering a precise cross that slipped through Ivan Provedel’s grasp, allowing Rafael Leão to bundle the ball home.
With none of Lazio’s last six matches featuring goals for both teams, the momentum seemed firmly against them—and Milan pressed to extend their advantage. Youssouf Fofana squandered a brilliant solo run with a miscued finish, and Leão later forced Provedel into action with a close-range header, underlining Milan’s intent to put the game beyond reach.
The hosts’ failure to find a second goal nearly proved costly. In stoppage time, Lazio were enraged when a potential penalty was waved away, prompting the dismissal of Allegri amid the protests. The drama changed nothing in the end, as Milan held firm to remain unbeaten in seven home matches (W6, D1).
Milan will stay top unless Napoli either draw or win by only one goal in their meeting with Roma tomorrow. Lazio, meanwhile, remain eighth and have now failed to score in six of their last seven away league games—including each of their last four—a run not seen from Le Aquile since 2012.
