Slot dismisses transfer rumours ahead of Forest clash, confirms Bradley and Wirtz will miss out

Liverpool manager Arne Slot insists it’s far too soon to dismiss the defending Premier League champions’ chances of challenging for the title, despite a difficult start to the season.
The Reds sit eighth in the table after five league defeats and host Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Slot, however, stressed there is still a long way to go.
“The best way to judge a league table is over 38 games, and the next best after 19 games,” he said. “Let’s see where we are then.
Variation in form isn’t just about new signings—the biggest thing we’re facing now is match fitness.”
Slot also explained the situation with Alexis Isak, who played limited minutes for Sweden due to a suspension risk, and noted Liverpool will be short of defensive options:
“We have five natural defenders available for seven games in 22 days. I don’t see anyone coming back before that. That’s something we knew would be hard when you bring in players.”
Preparing for Dyche’s Forest
On facing a Forest side now managed by Sean Dyche, Slot believes Liverpool are ready:
“Sean Dyche’s style is closer to Nuno than Ange (Postecoglou). It’s probably going to be a similar type of game compared to the last time we played them.”
Slot confirmed Andrew Robertson will be available, and Alisson Becker could play if all goes well in training. However, injuries continue to impact squad selection:
“We do have some issues after the international break. Conor Bradley is unable to play, Florian Wirtz is unable to play. That is far from ideal.”
World Cup fallout
Slot spoke about the disappointment of Dominik Szoboszlai following Hungary’s dramatic exit from World Cup qualifying, and reflected on the impact of missing Diogo Jota.
“We did talk to Dominik and Milos Kerkez. It was a big disappointment to be so close to playoffs and then go out in extra time of extra time.
It’s really hard to concede, especially when you see what it means for Robbo (Andrew Robertson) when you qualify after a long time.”
On Jota, Slot added:
“We miss the player and the person. Last season, he played a key role in helping us come from behind against Forest. We feel that absence on and off the pitch, and it’s hard for his family too.”
Transfer plans
Slot was questioned about potential January signings, including Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, but the Dutchman downplayed the discussion:
“I wasn’t expecting to talk about signings. There are so many games to be played before that, and it’s the last thing on my mind at the moment.
We have three centre-backs, maybe Ryan (Gravenberch) and Wata (Endo) can play there. We have other positions that are a bit more of an issue.”
He also spoke on squad management amid a hectic schedule:
“Joe Gomez has played two full games in 2025. If we want to keep him available longer, it may be a risk to play him seven times in 22 days. Maybe one or two players have to play in positions they normally wouldn’t.”
On reports of a new Ibrahima Konate contract, Slot gave a knowing response:
“My answer will be the one you expect. Do I have to say it?”
