Shock loss for RB Leipzig as Union Berlin dent Bayern chase

Mid-table Union Berlin halted a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions with an impressive 3–1 Bundesliga victory over second-placed RB Leipzig at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei.
Leipzig arrived in confident mood after dismantling Eintracht Frankfurt 6–0 last weekend, but despite enjoying early dominance in possession, they struggled to translate control into clear chances. Union, disciplined and well-organised, proved far more incisive when opportunities arose.
The hosts registered the first effort of the match when Woo-yeong Jeong flicked the ball over Willi Orbán before firing over from distance. Leipzig responded through Yan Diomande, whose twisting run ended with a powerful strike that forced Frederik Ronnow into an excellent save. The Union goalkeeper was again equal to the task moments later, reacting sharply to keep out Christoph Baumgartner’s header from the resulting corner.
Union came close before the break as Janik Haberer failed to connect cleanly with Derrick Kohn’s cross, bundling the ball wide in a first half largely dominated by mist as much as meaningful attacking play.
The game sprang into life after the interval, with the fog lifting and Union taking a deserved lead in the 57th minute. Kosta Nedeljkovic was dispossessed by Aljoscha Kemlein, and the ball was worked to Oliver Burke on the right. The former Leipzig forward cut inside and curled a superb left-footed finish into the top corner, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Leipzig wasted little time in responding. Union substitute captain Christopher Trimmel was caught in possession, allowing Conrad Harder to tee up Tidiam Gomis, who marked his first appearance on the scoresheet for the club with a confident strike.
Momentum briefly swung in Leipzig’s favour, but Union quickly regained control. Trimmel atoned for his earlier mistake with a perfectly delivered cross, which Ilyas Ansah headed home unmarked to restore the hosts’ lead.
Despite Leipzig’s attacking reputation, they offered little resistance in the closing stages. Union remained compact and clinical, and the victory was sealed late on when Tim Skarke rifled in a third to spark jubilant celebrations.
The result leaves Leipzig with just three wins from eight away league matches this season and facing the possibility of being overtaken by Borussia Dortmund. Union, meanwhile, climb to eighth place, with young defender Leopold Querfeld delivering an assured performance at the heart of the back line.
