Aston Villa secured a place in the UEFA Europa League last 16 by guaranteeing a top-eight finish after grinding out a hard-fought 1–0 victory away to Turkish heavyweights Fenerbahce.

Inside the cauldron of the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, silencing the home crowd was always going to be a challenge, and Villa initially looked at risk of being overawed by the atmosphere. However, Unai Emery’s side soon found their footing and began to carve out early chances.

Ollie Watkins came close to opening the scoring when Emiliano Buendía slipped a clever pass through the defence, only for a perfectly timed Milan Škriniar tackle to deny the striker a clear run at goal. Moments later, Watkins went closer still, steering Youri Tielemans’ corner goalwards, but Mert Müldür produced a vital clearance off the line.

Villa’s pressure finally told midway through the first half. A deflected Matty Cash cross dropped invitingly for the unmarked Jadon Sancho, who nodded home to score his first Europa League goal of the season and give the visitors a deserved lead.

Despite being well aware of the threat posed by Fenerbahce’s attack — led by former Villa striker Jhon Duran — the hosts struggled to create clear openings. Villa almost doubled their advantage when Buendía rounded goalkeeper Ederson, only to be denied by an extraordinary last-gasp clearance from Škriniar.

Fenerbahce were expected to emerge stronger after the interval, but it was Villa who started the second half on the front foot. Tyrone Mings’ cross-shot flashed across goal and was inches away from being turned in by Watkins at the far post.

The hosts responded by introducing Anderson Talisca, who made an immediate impact by forcing Marco Bizot into a fine one-handed save low to his right. The game opened up into an end-to-end affair, with Villa striking the woodwork through Cash before briefly thinking they had doubled their lead. Sancho’s delivery was turned into his own net by Ismail Yüksek, but the goal was ruled out after an offside call against Sancho in the build-up.

Fenerbahce thought they had found an equaliser when Kerem Aktürkoğlu converted at the second attempt, but VAR intervened to confirm Duran had strayed offside, much to Villa’s relief.

The visitors were forced to withstand intense pressure in the closing stages, yet they defended resolutely to see out the victory and rubber-stamp their place in the last 16.

For Fenerbahce, defeat marked their first home loss of the League Phase and leaves their European fate hanging in the balance, with a seeded or unseeded playoff spot now appearing the most likely outcome.
