Rooney praises Xhaka as ‘signing of the season’ after impressive start at Sunderland

Wayne Rooney has praised Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, describing him as “probably the signing of the season” after his standout performances since returning to the Premier League.
The 33-year-old rejoined English football this summer following two successful seasons at Bayer Leverkusen, where he played a key role in helping the German side win their first-ever Bundesliga title in 2023–24.
Since arriving at Sunderland, Xhaka has become central to the newly promoted team’s strong start, with the Black Cats currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table.
Speaking on BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Manchester United striker was full of admiration for the Swiss international.
“Coming back to the Premier League, you wonder if he can do it,” Rooney said. “Obviously, with a promoted team as well, you question what impact he could have — but he’s probably been the signing of the season. He’s been brilliant.”
Rooney also highlighted Xhaka’s resilience and character, recalling his turbulent spell at Arsenal and the way he turned his career around.
“When he had that situation with Arsenal, when he fell out with the fans, it showed his character to go and play for Arsenal again,” Rooney continued. “To get through that, then go on and perform for Arsenal, and later help Leverkusen beat Bayern Munich to the title for the first time in over a decade — it shows what a good player he is.”
The former England captain also praised Xhaka’s leadership and influence in the dressing room.
“Sunderland have got a very young squad,” he added. “He’s almost like a father figure and will be a huge help for the coach — a real link between the manager and the players. They made a lot of signings in the summer, and his experience will be invaluable for the team.”
