Roma grind out win over Como to reignite Serie A title push

Scudetto-chasing AS Roma maintained their flawless record when scoring first this season, edging past Como 1–0 to remain just three points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter Milan.
On a cold, gloomy evening in the capital, Roma once again showed their knack for grinding out narrow victories, though their first-half display offered little in the way of spectacle. The opening 25 minutes passed without incident, as neither side managed to carve out a meaningful opportunity.
Roma gradually began to assert some pressure, but a well-organised Como back line proved difficult to break down. Wesley França came closest before the interval, blazing over from inside the penalty area, though the presence of several defenders forced him into a hurried and ambitious effort.
The clearest chance of the half arrived late on when Wesley burst beyond the defence and delivered a low cross for Evan Ferguson. However, the Irish forward could only direct his effort straight at Como goalkeeper Jean Butez.
Both sides emerged with greater intent after the restart. Como matched their entire first-half shot count within the opening 10 minutes of the second period, while Roma thought they had taken the lead through Bryan Cristante, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough, when it arrived, was a blend of quality and fortune. A muscle injury to Jayden Addai gave Roma wing-back Devyne Rensch the space to drive to the byline and deliver a dangerous cross. With a slight touch from Matías Soulé, the ball fell kindly for Wesley, who rifled a low shot into the bottom corner to finally break the deadlock.
Despite holding only a slender advantage, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side rarely appeared in danger of letting it slip, calmly seeing out the closing stages to secure another vital three points.
While Como’s impressive rise this season has been notable, this contest underlined that they remain a step below Serie A’s elite. For Roma, however, it was yet another demonstration of resilience and efficiency—qualities that continue to fuel their pursuit of a first Scudetto in 24 years.
