Rodri faces FA charge over comments demanding referees remain ‘neutral’ in Man City matches

Rodri has been charged by the Football Association following comments he made about refereeing after Manchester City’s controversial 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on February 1.
The 29-year-old midfielder was unhappy with referee Robert Jones’s decision to allow Dominic Solanke’s goal, arguing that the Tottenham striker had kicked the back of City defender Marc Guehi in the act of scoring.
“I know we won too much, and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral,” Rodri said in an interview with Australian broadcaster Stan Sport. “It’s not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”
The FA confirmed on Friday that Rodri is charged with misconduct for remarks that “imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official and/or match officials, contrary to FA Rule 3.1.”
He has until February 18 to respond to the charge, with the possibility of a suspension if found guilty—a setback that could hinder City’s pursuit of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, currently four points ahead.
The case echoes a 2023 incident when then-Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp received a touchline ban for claiming referee Paul Tierney had “something against” his team.
