Real Madrid forward Rodrygo is set to miss the 2026 World Cup with Brazil and could be sidelined for the remainder of the year after the club confirmed he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the lateral meniscus in his right knee.

Rodrygo had returned to action on Monday in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Getafe. However, after a tussle near the touchline, he fell awkwardly and immediately clutched his knee. He continued for another 30 minutes, but it was clear he was in discomfort.

The injury is a major setback for Real Madrid, who are already missing Kylian Mbappé with a knee sprain and Franco Mastantuono, who was sent off against Getafe.

This leaves the club with only Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia, and Brahim Diaz—the latter of whom does not appear to be in the coach’s immediate plans—as fit attacking options.

Real Madrid currently trail Barcelona by four points at the top of LaLiga and face a crucial last-16 Champions League clash with Manchester City in the coming weeks.

Brazil will also feel the impact, with the squad preparing for friendlies against France and Croatia ahead of the World Cup. Manager Carlo Ancelotti now faces the challenge of reshuffling his attack without one of his key players.
