Girona held Real Madrid to a 1-1 LaLiga draw, marking just their second defeat in the last five Spanish top-flight matches and preventing Los Blancos from reclaiming top spot in the table.

The opening stages were cagey, with both sides struggling to find rhythm—partly due to Girona’s ultra-defensive setup. Real Madrid’s first notable opportunity came when Arda Güler’s shot went wide, followed shortly by Kylian Mbappé firing over despite being gifted a chance.

As the game gradually opened up, Girona sought to involve Bryan Gil, though the Spaniard was wasteful in possession. At the other end, Vinícius Júnior frequently squandered openings for Madrid, while Viktor Tsygankov produced the match’s first shot on target for the hosts.

Real dominated possession as the first half progressed but lacked precision in the final third. A towering Eder Militao header tested Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who reacted superbly. Mbappé thought he’d broken the deadlock just before halftime, only for VAR to rule the effort out for handball. Moments later, Azzedine Ounahi curled a superb strike past Thibaut Courtois to put Girona ahead.

Madrid came out strongly after the break, but Girona’s two banks of four continued to frustrate their attackers. Courtois made a remarkable save from Vladyslav Vanat, and an offside flag denied Vinícius an equalizer. Eventually, Vinícius earned a penalty after being fouled by Hugo Rincón, and Mbappé calmly converted to level the score.

Girona went close again when Vitor Reis failed to capitalize on a free-header chance, while both Mbappé and Vinícius missed further opportunities as the match became scrappy in the final stages. Despite late pressure from both sides, neither could find a winner.

The draw sees Girona extend their record to four draws from six league games where they scored first this season (W2), keeping them in the relegation zone only on goal difference. Real Madrid, meanwhile, remain just one point behind league leaders Barcelona after 14 matchdays, setting up another thrilling title race.
