SSC Napoli climbed level at the top of the Serie A table after a crucial 1-0 victory over title challengers AS Roma, secured by David Neres’ calm first-half finish. The result extends Gli Azzurri’s dominance in this fixture, with just one defeat in their last 12 meetings (W7, D4).

Roma began the evening two points clear of Napoli, having enjoyed their strongest 12-game start to a season since 2017/18 (W9, L3), and were eager to reclaim top spot following Milan’s win over Lazio on Saturday.

But it was Napoli who immediately seized control at the Stadio Olimpico. Rasmus Højlund forced an early save from Mile Svilar, before Giovanni Di Lorenzo rifled a fierce volley into the side netting from close range.

The visitors continued to apply pressure as the half unfolded. Svilar again came to Roma’s rescue, reacting sharply to divert Noa Lang’s dangerous delivery, but the hosts soon carved out opportunities of their own. Evan Ferguson, however, failed to find the target with two promising openings—and Napoli made Roma pay.

A sweeping counter-attack in the 36th minute saw Højlund slide Neres through on goal, and the Brazilian produced a composed, delicate chip over Svilar to give Napoli a deserved advantage.

Antonio Conte’s men nearly doubled their lead shortly after the restart, with Scott McTominay denied from point-blank range by the ever-alert Svilar.

Roma, who had scored five of their seven home league goals after the interval prior to this match, were still expected to mount a strong response. Seeking more attacking spark, Gian Piero Gasperini introduced Paulo Dybala and Neil El Aynaoui as the game entered its final 30 minutes.

Despite dominating possession in advanced areas, genuine scoring chances remained elusive for the Giallorossi. Their best opportunity arrived in the final minute of normal time, when Tommaso Baldanzi’s low drive was brilliantly turned away by Vanja Milinković-Savić.

That late effort proved Roma’s last hope of rescuing a point, as Napoli stood firm defensively to overtake their rivals in the Serie A standings and pull level at the summit.
