Injury-hit Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy has suffered another setback after sustaining a thigh injury, with Spanish media reporting he could be sidelined for several months.

The left-back was forced off just 14 minutes into Sunday’s 2-0 win over Espanyol, a result that delayed Barcelona’s LaLiga title celebrations.

The France international is set to undergo surgery in the coming hours after picking up what is believed to be his 16th injury since joining Real Madrid from Lyon in 2019.

In an official statement, the club confirmed: “Following tests carried out today on our player Ferland Mendy, he has been diagnosed with a rectus femoris tendon injury in his right leg.”

Mendy last appeared for France in June 2024 and is now unlikely to be considered for Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad selection.
