Nottingham Forest dominate dismal Chelsea to close in on safety

A youthful Nottingham Forest side produced a commanding 3-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea, deepening the crisis at Stamford Bridge and extending their strong recent record there to four unbeaten visits (W2, D2).
Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane had enjoyed a positive start with an FA Cup semi-final win over Leeds United, but any hopes of a renewed “manager bounce” disappeared within two minutes.
Forest struck early when Dilane Bakwa delivered a cross for Taiwo Awoniyi, who rose well to guide a fine header beyond Robert Sánchez, capitalising on his chance amid Vítor Pereira’s wholesale changes.
Enzo Fernández almost responded immediately, hitting the far post with a curling effort, but Chelsea’s problems quickly worsened.
Another delivery from the right caused confusion in the Chelsea defence, with Malo Gusto pulling back Awoniyi inside the box. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded, and Igor Jesus calmly converted it, leaving the home crowd stunned by yet another setback.
Morato was the only defender to retain his place from Nottingham Forest’s European campaign and, at 24, he was the most experienced member of a back line featuring a full debut for Luca Netz and just a second league start for 19-year-old Zach Abbott.
However, it was a moment of inexperience from the young full-back that handed Chelsea a rare opportunity to get back into the match just before half-time. In an attempt to challenge debutant Jesse Derry, he went for the ball and caused a worrying clash of heads.
Play was halted for around 10 minutes as the Chelsea youngster received treatment and was eventually stretchered off. During the stoppage, Cole Palmer was unable to convert from the penalty spot, as Matz Sels produced a strong save to deny him.
Levi Colwill’s long-awaited return provided a boost for Chelsea at the start of the second half, but it was Nottingham Forest’s substitutes who had the bigger impact.
Morgan Gibbs-White came off the bench to set up Taiwo Awoniyi for his second goal of the game, after a VAR review confirmed he was just onside.
However, Gibbs-White’s involvement was cut short when another heavy collision forced both him and Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez to leave the pitch.
João Pedro thought he had finally ended Chelsea’s nine-hour wait for a Premier League goal, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
He eventually did break the drought deep into stoppage time, finishing in spectacular fashion with an acrobatic bicycle kick, although by then the match had already been decided.
Chelsea’s defeat extends their losing run in the league to six games, their worst streak since a similar sequence in 1993. The result leaves them in ninth place, with a top-five finish now mathematically impossible.
For Nottingham Forest, the win moves them six points clear of the relegation zone with three games remaining. A seven-match unbeaten run has all but secured their Premier League status, allowing them to turn attention towards their UEFA Europa League semi-final second-leg clash with Aston Villa.
