RB Leipzig rescue late draw against VfL Wolfsburg but suffer blow to top-four hopes

RB Leipzig finished the weekend fifth in the Bundesliga after being held to a 2-2 draw by VfL Wolfsburg, a result that dents their top-four ambitions while doing little to ease Wolfsburg’s relegation worries. The visitors have now gone 14 consecutive league games without a clean sheet.
Looking to respond to their midweek DFB-Pokal defeat to FC Bayern Munich, Leipzig dominated the first half but failed to convert their superiority into goals. Wolfsburg’s only real chance before the break came when Christian Eriksen saw a long-range effort dip narrowly over the bar.
At the other end, goalkeeper Kamil Grabara delivered a remarkable first-half display. He denied Yan Diomande from a tight angle, produced a superb stop to keep out Conrad Harder’s overhead kick, and thwarted Brajan Gruda from close range.
Grabara continued his heroics after halftime, saving from Diomande following an excellent first touch and quick turn. That resilience provided the platform for Wolfsburg to strike on the counter. Adam Daghim danced into the box and squared for top scorer Mohamed Amoura, who rifled a finish high into the far top corner.
Leipzig, the only Bundesliga side yet to recover a point from a losing position this season, responded swiftly. Grabara’s rare mistake gifted possession to Gruda, who fed Diomande to slot home at the near post.
Parity was short-lived. Wolfsburg struck again on the break as Jeanuel Belocian surged down the left and set up Mattias Svanberg, who finished coolly past Maarten Vandevoordt.
Leipzig struggled to create clear openings thereafter, and Wolfsburg appeared on course for a crucial victory. However, defensive lapses in the closing minutes proved costly. Gruda found space on the edge of the area and curled a precise left-footed effort into the far corner to rescue a point.
The only draw of the Bundesliga matchday leaves both managers frustrated. Wolfsburg have now failed to beat any of the current top-seven sides this season, while Leipzig at least ended their run of failing to recover from losing positions and extended their unbeaten streak in Sunday Bundesliga matches to 13.
