Preview: Arsenal Set to Face Atletico Madrid in Thrilling Champions League Showdown

Arsenal Eye Strong Champions League Start as Atletico Madrid Loom
Arsenal enter their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid in imperious form, having won both of their opening group-stage matches. The North London side are one of just six teams with a 100% record at this early stage of the competition and remain unbeaten in their last eight matches across all competitions. Confidence will be high, especially given Atletico’s struggles against English opposition, having never won away to an English team in the group or league stages of the Champions League.
Atletico Struggle in England
Diego Simeone’s side have managed only two draws and three defeats in England, including a 4-0 loss to Chelsea 16 years ago this month. In total, Atletico have just one victory in nine European matches against English clubs—a 1-0 win over Manchester United in 2022.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have kept clean sheets in both group matches, putting Atletico on the back foot before the Emirates kick-off. The Gunners also boast one of the best defensive records in Europe, allowing under one expected goal (xG) in seven of their last ten league-stage matches since last season.
Bukayo Saka to Lead the Line
Bukayo Saka has been instrumental for Arsenal, directly contributing to 17 goals in 19 Champions League appearances (11 goals, six assists). Since his UCL debut in late 2023, only Raphinha has recorded a better minutes-per-goal involvement among wingers playing 500+ minutes. Arsenal’s attacking threat, however, extends beyond Saka, with Gabriel Martinelli emerging as their top scorer so far this season with two goals.
Atletico’s Threat: Alvarez and Co.
Atletico have firepower of their own. Julian Alvarez, familiar to Arsenal from his time at Manchester City, has 13 goals in 11 UCL games since the start of 2023-24. Alongside Antoine Griezmann, Alvarez drives Atletico’s attacking play, with Marcos Llorente adding energy and Conor Gallagher providing midfield solidity. Gallagher leads the competition this season with seven interceptions, demonstrating Atletico’s ability to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm.
The Spanish side also excel in key metrics: they top the UCL for line-breaking passes (22), rank third for shot conversion (29%), and fourth for shots on target (16), all outperforming Arsenal in this campaign.
Historical Context Favors Atletico
The head-to-head record slightly favors Atletico. The sides have met twice in official competition—during the 2017/18 Europa League semi-finals. Despite playing much of one match with 10 men, Atletico drew 1-1 at the Emirates and won 1-0 in Madrid to reach the final, where they defeated Marseille 3-0.
Squad News
Simeone has almost a full-strength squad available, while Mikel Arteta will be without Gabriel Jesus, Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz, and Martin Ødegaard.
With Arsenal’s home advantage and recent form, they will hope to maintain their perfect start, but Atletico’s proven European pedigree and attacking threat mean this promises to be a fiercely competitive encounter.
