Pierre Brincat, one of the key figures behind the growth and development of women’s football in Malta, is set to retire from his role after decades of dedicated service to the game.

In a statement, the Malta Football Association announced that Brincat will be stepping down as Director of Women’s Football as 2025 draws to a close, paying tribute to his immense contribution to the sport.

“As 2025 draws to a close, the Women’s Football Department within the Malta FA prepares to bid farewell to the Director of Women’s Football, Mr Pierre Brincat,” the statement read.

A long-standing advocate of the women’s game, Brincat’s journey began at club level before he made history in 2003 by becoming head coach of Malta’s first-ever women’s national team to compete internationally. Between 2003 and 2014, he led the national side in 58 official matches, guiding the team through a period of steady progress and increased competitiveness on the international stage.

His most significant achievement came during the qualification campaign for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, when Malta finished top of their preliminary group ahead of Latvia, Albania, and Luxembourg. The historic qualification to the main qualifying round remains a defining moment for women’s football in the country.

After stepping away from coaching duties, Brincat continued his work off the pitch by taking on the role of Director of Women’s Football. In this capacity, he focused on the long-term growth and strategic development of the women’s programme, helping to establish stronger structures and clearer pathways for players and coaches alike.

“Today, he leaves behind a structure and pathway that are considerably stronger than when he first assumed the role,” the Malta FA noted.

The statement concluded with a message of appreciation and gratitude: “Thank you for the dedication, passion, and years of service you gave to women’s football in Malta. Enjoy your well-earned retirement you will always be part of this journey.”
