Manchester City visited the Stadium of Light aiming to end Sunderland’s unbeaten home run in the Premier League this season, but they had to settle for a 0-0 draw after a frustrating evening in front of goal on the first night of the New Year.

Thursday’s stalemate leaves City in second place, four points behind leaders Arsenal at the season’s midpoint. Pep Guardiola had hoped for a stronger showing from his attacking players, who hit the woodwork and saw a goal ruled out for offside.

“Tough place to come,” Guardiola told the BBC. “The amount of chances we missed in the six-yard box—not difficult ones—but we could not convert. We didn’t do what we talked about in the first half, but overall it was a really good game.”

City tried every approach to break Sunderland’s defense, from wide crosses to intricate central build-ups, but the hosts matched them with disciplined defending, managing to keep a clean sheet despite heavy pressure in the second half.

“To break the lines and have the composure to do it, it was better in the second half. The guys did everything,” Guardiola said. “They are a bit heads-down, but we have to keep our heads up because in three days we face a tough game against Chelsea.”

Sunderland’s fans also played a key role, vocally supporting their team throughout. Defender Trai Hume praised their impact after the final whistle.

“Every time we play at home, the fans are incredible. They’re our 12th man, and you can see that in our performances and home record this season,” Hume said. “They always push us. We make it tough for opposition teams here, and we need to keep it that way.”
