Pep Guardiola confirms Rodri’s return under close watch before Liverpool showdown

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on midfielder Rodri’s recovery as the Spaniard continues his gradual return from injury ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.
Rodri, who won the 2024 Ballon d’Or following a stellar campaign, endured a frustrating season last term after suffering a serious knee injury just a month into the campaign. He made his comeback earlier this year, only to pick up another setback, with Guardiola admitting he is taking a cautious approach with the influential midfielder.
City maintained their strong Champions League form with a commanding 4–1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, but Rodri was again absent from the matchday squad. Guardiola explained after the game that the 28-year-old is still not fully fit and cannot be rushed back into action.
“Rodri was not ready, and I wanted to be cautious,” Guardiola said. “He doesn’t feel perfect, so we didn’t want to take any risks. These little setbacks remind us that he needs a bit more time to feel good and play football.”
A decision on Rodri’s availability is expected to be made closer to Sunday, when City host Liverpool in what promises to be a high-intensity encounter between the Premier League’s top contenders.
While reports suggest the midfielder remains a doubt for the showdown, Guardiola is set to provide a definitive update in his pre-match press conference later this week — with City fans anxiously awaiting news on the fitness of their midfield talisman.
