Nick Kyrgios defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match on Sunday in Dubai, winning 6-3, 6-3 in a contest that featured modified rules and sparked debate among tennis fans.

The showdown bore little resemblance to the historic 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which carried major significance for the nascent women’s professional tour and the fight for equal prize money. In that encounter, King, at the peak of her career, defeated 55-year-old Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in Houston.

Sunday’s event included rule tweaks designed to balance the contest: each player was allowed only one serve, and the dimensions of Sabalenka’s court side were reduced by nine percent to mitigate Kyrgios’ power and speed advantage.

The event, organized by the agency representing both players, drew criticism over its motives, with some questioning whether it prioritized entertainment and broadcast revenue over meaningful competition. Kyrgios’ past controversies, including a 2021 assault admission and previous misogynistic remarks, also fueled debate about his participation in the match.

Despite having played only six tour-level matches over the past three seasons and dropping to 671 in the rankings, Kyrgios, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up, proved strong enough to overcome four-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka.

“Honestly, it was a really tough match. She is a hell of a player and such a great champion,” Kyrgios said. “She broke my serve numerous times, and I had to strap in. I would love to play her again and showcase her talent and what I have left in the tank. Ultimately it was a really hard-fought battle.”

Kyrgios admitted to feeling nervous as Sabalenka entered the arena to Eye of the Tiger in a sparkling jacket. “Not many people would have put their hand up to be in this position,” he added.

Sabalenka, who retained her US Open title in September and reached the Australian and French Open finals this year, expressed interest in a rematch. “I think I put up a great fight. He got really tired. I made a lot of great shots, moved a lot to the net, drop shots. Really enjoyed the show. Next time when I play him, I already know the tactics, his strengths and weaknesses, and it will be a better match for sure. I love to challenge myself and I’d love to play again.”
