Newcastle manager Howe confident Tonali will stay, unlike Isak

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed confidence that Sandro Tonali will remain committed to the club, amid recent speculation linking the Italian midfielder with a move to Arsenal.
Rumours of a last-minute transfer to the Gunners on Monday were quickly dismissed after reports in Italy suggested that a representative of Tonali had contacted Arsenal, sparking unnecessary headlines.
Newcastle’s season preparations were previously disrupted by the saga surrounding Alexander Isak, who forced through a Premier League-record £125 million move to Liverpool in September. Howe was asked whether he feared a repeat with Tonali this summer but insisted the 25-year-old midfielder is happy at St James’ Park.
“I don’t think so, but lots of things happen without my knowledge,” Howe said on Tuesday.
“As far as I’m aware, we’ve got a player who is an outstanding footballer and an outstanding person. He’s very happy here, has a great relationship with me and his teammates, and seems really content with himself. That would surprise me.
“But of course, our best players will always attract attention from other clubs — that’s just the reality of football. We want to keep the group together, stay progressive, and Sandro is an important part of that. He’s focused on hitting his best levels to help the team.”
Howe also admitted his frustration at not being able to strengthen his squad during the transfer window, despite injuries and Newcastle’s continued involvement in four competitions.
“Unfortunately, we were left with no other option,” he said.
“We’ve only been active in one transfer window in the last four or five years. Under financial restrictions, we have to be smart, so we’ve decided to wait until the summer.”
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s defence of their League Cup crown faces a stern test. Howe’s side must overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit away to Manchester City in Wednesday’s semi-final second leg. Last season, the Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the competition.
“It’s going to be an almighty challenge — there’s no bigger test than Manchester City away,” Howe said. “But we believe in ourselves and we’re going to give it our best shot.”
