Newcastle United extended their impressive unbeaten run at St James’ Park to 11 matches in all competitions (W9, D2) with a controlled 2-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace.

Eddie Howe’s side had opened the scoring in eight of their previous nine home league games this season and looked keen to continue that trend, though they were twice denied by the offside flag in the first half. Anthony Gordon first tapped Yoane Wissa’s pass into an empty net, before Joelinton latched onto Fabian Schär’s long ball and finished smartly, only for both efforts to be ruled out.

Despite the setbacks, Newcastle dominated proceedings and kept Palace under sustained pressure. Dean Henderson was the busier of the two goalkeepers, producing close-range saves to deny Schär’s header as well as further efforts from Wissa and Lewis Hall.

Palace almost snatched the lead against the run of play just before the break, however, with Jean-Philippe Mateta and Will Hughes both firing narrowly wide.

Much of the second-half focus was on Palace debutant Brennan Johnson, and the Welshman nearly made an immediate impact when Adam Wharton played him through midway through the half. Johnson scuffed his effort, though, allowing Nick Pope to save comfortably.

Newcastle continued to pose the greater threat, and Bruno Guimarães came agonisingly close to scoring directly from a corner for the second time this season as his delivery clipped the crossbar. The Brazilian made amends soon after, rising to head home Lewis Miley’s cutback and finally give the hosts a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the opener, the Magpies pressed for a second and found it within seven minutes. Another dangerous Guimarães corner caused problems for Henderson, and Malick Thiaw reacted quickest to poke in his first goal at St James’ Park.

Joe Willock squandered a late chance in stoppage time, but it mattered little as Newcastle secured all three points. The result underlined their dominance in this fixture, with the Magpies now having kept five consecutive home clean sheets against Palace. For the Eagles, the defeat extended their winless league run to five matches (D1, L4).
