Naxxar Lions maintained their two-point advantage over Birkirkara in a high-stakes encounter on Sunday, as the two sides played out a 0-0 draw. The result keeps the Lions firmly in the hunt for a Top Six berth, moving them level with Gżira United in fourth place with 14 points, while the Stripes remain in eighth.

Tactical Adjustments

Birkirkara coach Paul Zammit opted for a reshuffle following their recent loss to Żabbar St Patrick, making four changes. Roni Santos stepped in for the suspended Alessandro Coppola, while Neil Micallef, Leandro Lacunza, and Macula were handed starts. Conversely, Naxxar’s Winston Muscat showed faith in the lineup that secured a 2-1 victory over Tarxien Rainbows, naming an unchanged starting XI.

First Half: A Tactical Chess Match

The opening 45 minutes were characterized by defensive discipline, with clear-cut chances at a premium. Birkirkara’s Donovan Makoma registered the first threat after eight minutes, forcing Matthias Debono into a sharp save from distance.

Naxxar grew into the game late in the half. Vinicius Baiano tested Miguel Angel Martinez from range in the 40th minute, and shortly after, a dangerous surge into the box by Louis Pahama was expertly neutralized by a recovery challenge from Roni Santos.

Second Half: Goal-Line Heroics and Late Drama

The Stripes emerged from the interval with increased intent. Just two minutes after the restart, Matthias Debono parried a stinging drive from Manuel Morello. The rebound fell to Macula, whose goal-bound effort was heroically cleared off the line by JP Iseppe.

Birkirkara continued to pressure, with Micallef seeing a first-time strike deflected wide on 64 minutes, but the Lions gradually wrestled back control. In the closing stages, Iseppe nearly turned hero at the other end with a long-range blast that whistled just wide.

In a frantic period of added time, Birkirkara goalkeeper Martinez proved to be the savior, pulling off a vital double save to deny Gabriel Costa from point-blank range and subsequently parrying a follow-up from Pahama to ensure the points were shared.
