Għaxaq Wolves moved back to the top of the MAFA First Division standings after edging past San Ġwann Pro Evolution Academy with a 1-0 victory.

It was far from an easy match for the Wolves, especially in the second half when they were reduced to ten men and had to defend resolutely to secure all three points.

The decisive goal arrived in the 38th minute through Stanimir Miloskovic, who headed past the San Ġwann goalkeeper following a cross from the right.

With this win, the Wolves now hold a three-point advantage over Marsa St Michael, although they have played one match more.

Meanwhile, the second round of the Second Division championship also got underway, with teams starting again from zero points. As Attard Edex Kings have already secured promotion, one more team will join them in this second phase.

Attard began their second-round campaign with a 1-1 draw against Gudja Wanderers. Top scorer Lucas Carvalho gave Attard an early lead after just one minute, before Brandon Stivensen equalised in the 53rd minute.

In another closely contested match, Swieqi United and Ta’ Ġiorni Wanderers played out a goalless draw.

Over the past weekend, the MAFA KO competition also concluded its Round of 16 phase.

Marsa St Michael were pushed harder than expected before overcoming Balluta Barracudas 8-7 on penalties after a 5-5 draw in regular time. Darko Todorovski scored a hat-trick for Marsa, while Nehemiah Perry and Marcelo Coutinho added two more goals. For Balluta, Andrea Loferice netted three times, with Sebastian Agius and Timmy Zammit Lupi also on target.

Marsa prevailed 3-2 in the penalty shootout.

In an all-Second Division clash, Naxxar Victorians defeated Mqabba Albions 2-1. Miguel Grima put Albions ahead in the 17th minute, before Fabrizio Farrugia levelled on the half-hour mark. Keith Zammit scored the winner for Naxxar in the 50th minute.
