Mourinho Eyes More Silverware for Newcastle After League Cup Glory

Benfica manager José Mourinho believes Newcastle’s long-awaited English League Cup triumph will inspire the club to even greater achievements. The victory ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and marked a historic moment for the northeast side.
Mourinho, who has a deep affection for Newcastle due to his connection with the late Bobby Robson, spoke ahead of Benfica’s Champions League clash at St James’ Park on Tuesday. Robson, Mourinho’s mentor during his managerial stints at Sporting Lisbon, Porto, and Barcelona, coached Newcastle and left an enduring legacy at the club.
Asked how Robson would have reacted to the League Cup win over Liverpool, Mourinho said:
“Sir Bobby is a legend here and in England. There are many reasons to be a legend. He loved this club and gave everything to it. Of course, he would have been so happy with that victory. I was thrilled too.”
Mourinho emphasized that while the League Cup is a milestone, Newcastle and their fans are aiming higher. “I know it is not the ultimate target. The League Cup is the beginning. Playing in the Champions League is another very important step, and I think the club is moving in the right direction.”
Reflecting on his early career, Mourinho recalled his role as Robson’s interpreter at Sporting, which laid the foundation for his successful managerial journey. “He put a lot of trust in me, and I tried to repay him with everything I gave. I don’t know if I ever did enough, but I tried.”
The 62-year-old also highlighted Robson’s enduring passion for Newcastle: “For years, there was not a single day he did not show his pride and love for the club, the city, and the region. Even when I managed other English clubs, I never hid how dear Newcastle is to me because of the influence of such a legendary figure.”
Despite Benfica’s challenging start to the Champions League, Mourinho is looking forward to the encounter at St James’ Park. “I told them it’s beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Even as an opponent, it’s a wonderful experience.”
