Mikel Arteta described Arsenal’s 4-1 demolition of north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as a cathartic release after what he called “72 hours in hell.”

Doubles from Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium restored Arsenal’s five-point lead over second-placed Manchester City and erased the frustration of their midweek slip-up.

The Gunners had blown a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at bottom-of-the-table Wolves, leaving the title temporarily out of their hands. Arteta admitted it was difficult to lift spirits after back-to-back draws that left City in control if they win their remaining 11 games.

But Arteta and his coaching staff reignited Arsenal’s passion, inspiring a dominant display that tore Tottenham apart for the second time this season.

I cannot be prouder or happier with what I saw, especially after the last 72 hours,” Arteta said. “You have to lift yourself up when you are angry, ashamed, upset. This isn’t just a job—this is our passion, our purpose. We brought everyone together and were outstanding on the pitch.”

Standing Up Under Pressure

Arsenal, without a major trophy since 2020 and having faltered in recent title races, have faced criticism for lacking character under pressure. Their victory over Spurs, however, offered clear proof that the team can rise to the occasion.

When it is on the edge, and people are doubting, you have to stand up,” Arteta said. “We showed what we are made of, and we have to show it again and again. It’s been a massive rollercoaster.”

The 4-1 result marked Arsenal’s biggest away win against Tottenham in the league since a 5-0 victory in 1978. With a 5-0 win at the Emirates in November, this is only the second season since 1934-35 that the Gunners have won both north London derbies by three or more goals.

Tottenham’s Struggles Continue

The rout was a harsh introduction to the Premier League for interim Tottenham boss Igor Tudor, who inherited a squad plagued by injuries and low confidence. Tottenham are now just four points above the relegation zone, facing the threat of their first top-flight relegation since 1977-78.

Arsenal are one of the best teams in the world. They were too much for us with the problems we have,” Tudor said. “Our lack of confidence was clear. It’s tough, but it’s also a chance to understand our situation, work hard, and change our habits.”

After the final whistle, Arteta celebrated alongside his players in front of jubilant Arsenal fans, while dejected Tottenham supporters had already begun leaving the stadium—a vivid contrast highlighting the gulf between the sides.
