Michael Carrick has emphasised Manchester United’s commitment to “diversity” following controversial comments by the club’s co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who claimed the United Kingdom has been “colonised by immigrants.”

Ratcliffe faced widespread criticism for the remarks last week and later apologised if his comments “offended some people.”

Speaking to the media on Friday for the first time since the controversy, United’s interim manager Carrick praised the club’s inclusive culture.

“Sir Jim has made a statement, and the club has issued a response, so it’s not my place to add to that,” Carrick said. “What I can say is that, having been at this club for many years, we always aim to make a positive impact globally. We’re really proud of the environment and the culture here. Equality, diversity, and respect for one another are values we carry through every day.”

Carrick, a former United midfielder who spent 12 years at the club, is in his second spell as interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s departure in January. He stressed that United has a long-standing commitment to welcoming people from all backgrounds.

“Part of being at this club is understanding what it means globally and the responsibilities that come with it,” he said. “I’ve worked here under various managers and with staff from all backgrounds, and I’m proud of what the club stands for.”

Carrick also expressed confidence that Ratcliffe’s comments would not affect the team’s cohesion ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash with Everton.

“We have a really strong group, from players to staff, and there’s constant communication and support across the club,” he added. “The boys have been in good spirits this week, and we’re focused on the next game. We are here to support each other.”
