Two opening-day winners go head-to-head in Guadalajara as co-hosts Mexico take on South Korea in a match that could secure a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico could hardly have asked for a better start to the tournament. In front of a passionate home crowd at the iconic Estadio Azteca, El Tri opened the World Cup with a confident 2-0 victory over South Africa, immediately raising expectations that they can make a deep run on home soil.

That victory followed a win in their final match at the 2022 World Cup, meaning Mexico now have the opportunity to record three consecutive World Cup victories for the first time in their history. Another three points here would guarantee them a top-two finish in Group A and move them a step closer to erasing the disappointment of their group-stage exit four years ago.

However, Javier Aguirre’s side cannot afford to underestimate their opponents. Mexico’s recent record at Estadio Akron is far from dominant, with just one victory from their previous three matches at the venue (D1, L1).

South Korea also began their campaign with an impressive result, recovering from a goal down to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1. The Taegeuk Warriors displayed resilience and quality throughout the contest, ultimately earning a victory that has significantly boosted their qualification hopes.

A win over Mexico would secure South Korea’s place in the knockout rounds and mark the first time they have ever won their opening two matches at a World Cup. To achieve that, however, they must overcome a poor historical record against CONCACAF opposition at the finals, having never beaten a team from the region in three previous attempts (D1, L2).

Head-to-Head

Mexico have enjoyed the upper hand in previous meetings between the nations. El Tri have won both of their World Cup encounters with South Korea, including a 2-1 victory at the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Overall, Mexico are unbeaten in their last four meetings with the Koreans, recording three wins and one draw.

Key Players

Raúl Jiménez remains one of Mexico’s most reliable attacking threats and has scored in each of the last two meetings between these nations. After finding the net against South Africa, he could become the first Mexican player to score in each of his first two World Cup starts.

Julián Quiñones is chasing the same milestone after also scoring on matchday one.

For South Korea, Hwang In-beom was the standout performer in the victory over the Czech Republic, contributing a goal and an assist. It was the second consecutive international match in which he has both scored and assisted, underlining his growing importance to the side.

Team News

Mexico will be without defender César Montes, who serves a suspension following his red card against South Africa.

South Korea are monitoring the fitness of Kim Tae-hyeon, whose availability remains uncertain ahead of the contest.

Betting Analysis

Mexico are understandably favourites given their home advantage and strong record against Asian opposition. They have won all five of their previous World Cup matches against teams from Asia, while nine of their last 11 victories have come alongside a clean sheet.

However, South Korea’s performance against the Czech Republic suggested they are capable of causing problems for higher-ranked opponents. Their energy, organisation and attacking quality could make them a dangerous underdog, particularly with Mexico missing the influential Montes in defence.

With confidence high after their opening victory and the value available in the market, South Korea represent an intriguing outsider selection.
