Mourinho Era Begins with Real Madrid Landing Chelsea Defender Cucurella

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea on a six-year contract, becoming the club’s first major transfer since Jose Mourinho returned as manager.
The two clubs did not reveal the financial details of the agreement, although reports from British media suggested the deal could be worth up to £51.8 million ($69.5 million).
“Real Madrid and Chelsea FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Marc Cucurella, who will be part of our squad for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2032,” the Spanish giants announced in a statement.
The move comes as Real Madrid aim to rebuild after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, where they failed to win the LaLiga title and were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.
Club president Florentino Pérez, who recently secured a further four-year term in charge, had pledged to strengthen Real Madrid’s defensive depth during his re-election campaign.
Marc Cucurella originally joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 in a deal reported to be worth up to £63 million. Since arriving in west London, he made 163 appearances across all competitions.
The 27-year-old endured a difficult debut season at Stamford Bridge, struggling to find consistency and establish himself in the team.
However, he later became a key figure under manager Enzo Maresca, often operating as an inverted full-back. During his time at Chelsea, he helped the club win both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
Cucurella has also established himself as an important member of the Spanish national team since making his debut in 2021, earning 23 caps under Luis de la Fuente. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA European Championship in 2024 and remains included in Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
In March, the left-back publicly questioned Chelsea’s youth-focused recruitment approach, suggesting the club needed a better balance between experienced players and emerging talent.
Chelsea endured a disappointing 2025-26 Premier League campaign, finishing 10th and missing out on qualification for European competition.
