Egypt hold Belgium in entertaining Seattle stalemate

Emam Ashour’s first international goal put Egypt on the brink of history, before a Romelu Lukaku-inspired comeback salvaged a 1-1 draw for Belgium at Seattle Stadium.
The Pacific Northwest clash opened Group G with high drama, leaving all four teams perfectly level after the opening round of fixtures.
Pharaohs Flirt with History
Egypt entered the match looking to rewrite their World Cup record books, having never won a game in tournament history. They took a giant step toward breaking that curse in the 19th minute.
On his 34th birthday, Mohamed Salah turned provider, teeing up Ashour with a precise pass. The Al Ahly midfielder took one composed touch before sweeping a low strike through the legs of Thomas Meunier and past a diving Thibaut Courtois, sending the Egyptian fans into raptures.
Lukaku Impact Forces Equaliser
Egypt protected their slender lead into the second half, but the introduction of Romelu Lukaku completely altered the game’s dynamic. Just 20 seconds after stepping onto the pitch, Europe’s second-highest international goalscorer made his presence felt.
Meunier whipped a dangerous cross into the box toward the powerful striker. Under immense pressure from the arriving Lukaku, Egypt defender Mohamed Hany inadvertently poked the ball past his own goalkeeper, Mostafa Shoubir, to gift Belgium a 66th-minute equaliser.
Despite late pressure from both sides, defenses held firm to ensure the points were shared in Seattle.
Group G Standings
With both opening matches ending in draws, Group G remains completely deadlocked.
