Canada and Qatar meet at BC Place in Vancouver knowing that a victory could put one foot in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both sides collected their first-ever points at a World Cup on matchday one, but neither will be satisfied with a draw as the battle for qualification in Group B begins to take shape.

Co-hosts Canada were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina after rescuing a point with a late equaliser. While the result fell short of expectations given their status as favourites, it nevertheless represented a historic milestone, ending a run of six consecutive World Cup defeats and securing the nation’s first point on football’s biggest stage.

Jesse Marsch’s side will now be determined to go one better and claim a first-ever World Cup victory. The setting could hardly be more favourable, with Canada boasting an outstanding recent record in Vancouver. The Reds have won each of their last four matches at BC Place, scoring 17 goals and conceding just twice in the process.

There is also additional motivation on offer. Finishing top of Group B would place Canada on a route through the tournament where both their Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches would also be played in Vancouver, offering a significant home advantage should they progress.

Qatar also celebrated a historic moment in their opening fixture, coming from behind to snatch a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Switzerland in a 1-1 draw. It was the first point in the Gulf nation’s World Cup history after a difficult tournament debut as hosts in 2022.

However, Julen Lopetegui’s side remain without a win in seven matches (D3, L4), and concerns remain over their attacking output. Remarkably, the only goal Qatar have scored across their last four outings was an own goal, underlining their recent struggles in front of goal.

Even so, back-to-back draws have at least halted a losing streak and leave Qatar with the opportunity to go three matches unbeaten for the first time since June 2024.

Head-to-Head

The only previous meeting between these nations came in a friendly in September 2022, with Canada securing a comfortable 2-0 victory.

This will also be just Canada’s second World Cup match against non-European opposition. Their previous such encounter ended in a 2-1 defeat to Morocco at the 2022 finals.

Key Players

Cyle Larin once again demonstrated his importance to Canada by scoring the equaliser against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Interestingly, six of his last seven appearances for club and country have seen him either score a goal or receive a booking.

For Qatar, experienced defender Pedro Miguel offers a threat from set-pieces. He scored in Qatar’s most recent victory against the United Arab Emirates in October, although only two of his last seven goals for club and country have come after half-time.

Alphonso Davies is pushing for a return to the starting line-up after being carefully managed in the opening match, which would provide Canada with a significant boost.

Team News

Canada are expected to welcome Alphonso Davies back into contention for a starting role after limiting his minutes against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Qatar have no major injury or suspension concerns ahead of the contest and should have a full squad available.

Betting Analysis

Everything points towards a tightly contested and potentially low-scoring affair. Canada have built their recent success on defensive solidity, conceding more than once in only one of their last 17 international matches.

Meanwhile, ten of Canada’s last 11 fixtures have produced fewer than three goals, while five of Qatar’s last six matches have also finished under the 2.5-goal line. With both teams often involved in closely fought encounters, goals may once again be at a premium.

Recommended Bet: Under 2.5 Goals
