Czech Republic and South Africa seek first points in crucial Group A Clash

The two losing sides from the opening round of Group A fixtures at the 2026 FIFA World Cup meet in Atlanta knowing that defeat could all but end their hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Both the Czech Republic and South Africa suffered disappointing starts to their campaigns and will be desperate to get points on the board.
The Czech Republic looked on course for a positive result in their opening match against South Korea after taking the lead just before the hour mark. However, a dramatic collapse saw them concede twice and eventually fall to a 2-1 defeat. It was a frustrating setback for a side that had won each of their previous six matches before arriving at the tournament.
History offers little comfort for the Czechs, who have only twice before lost their opening two World Cup matches, in 1954 and 1970. Nevertheless, they remain a dangerous attacking outfit, with seven of their last 14 World Cup goals coming from headers. Their aerial threat could once again prove decisive, especially with a potentially decisive encounter against co-hosts Mexico still to come on matchday three.
South Africa endured an even more difficult opening fixture, losing 2-0 to Mexico in a match where they struggled to create meaningful opportunities. Matters were made worse by the dismissals of Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane, both of whom will miss this contest through suspension.
The result extended Bafana Bafana’s winless run to six matches in all competitions (D3, L3). However, they can draw inspiration from their last World Cup meeting with European opposition, when they defeated France 2-1 on home soil in 2010. Another victory against European opponents would be a timely boost and help them avoid losing consecutive World Cup matches for the first time.
This will be the first World Cup meeting between the two nations. Their only previous encounter came in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Key Players
Ladislav Krejčí remains one of the Czech Republic’s main attacking threats, having registered four goal contributions in his last five international appearances (three goals and one assist). Notably, five of his six goals for his country have come via headers.
For South Africa, Lyle Foster is the player most likely to provide a spark in attack. He contributed four goals and assists combined during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and has scored each of his last five international goals after half-time.
Team News
The Czech Republic have no significant injury or suspension concerns ahead of the match.
South Africa will be without suspended duo Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane following their red cards against Mexico.
Betting Analysis
Despite their opening defeat, the Czech Republic appear well placed to bounce back against a weakened South African side. Their superior form coming into the tournament and South Africa’s disciplinary issues give them a clear edge.
