Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke is closing in on a move to Tottenham Hotspur after Brighton & Hove Albion reportedly accepted the club’s latest bid.

According to Dutch publication Voetbal International, Brighton and Spurs have reached an agreement worth €60 million for the defender. Van Hecke is understood to have already settled personal terms with the North London side several weeks ago and is now set to complete the transfer.

The move had appeared increasingly likely after the 25-year-old declined to sign a new contract at Brighton. Although his current deal runs until 2027, Van Hecke has been keen to take the next step in his career and had already pushed for a transfer during the previous summer window, only for Brighton to reject the possibility at the time.

Should the deal be finalised, Van Hecke would become one of the most expensive signings in Tottenham’s history, ranking behind only Xavi Simons, Dominic Solanke, Mohammed Kudus and Tanguy Ndombele in terms of transfer fee.

The transfer would also place the Dutch defender among the most expensive players from the Netherlands ever sold, while marking another major departure for Brighton, becoming the club’s fourth sale to generate a fee of at least €60 million.

Jan Paul van Hecke arrived at Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020 after completing a €2 million move from Dutch club NAC Breda. The defender gained valuable experience through loan spells at SC Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers before establishing himself in Brighton’s first team under managers Graham Potter and Roberto De Zerbi.

Since breaking into the senior squad, Van Hecke has become a key figure for the Seagulls, making 131 appearances in all competitions across four full seasons with the club.

His impressive performances at club level earned him a senior debut for the Netherlands in 2024. Since then, the centre-back has gone on to collect 14 international caps and has cemented his place in the national team setup.

Football runs in the family for Van Hecke, whose uncle, Jan Poortvliet, represented the Netherlands in the 1978 World Cup final. The 25-year-old is now writing his own chapter on the international stage, having established himself as a regular starter at the 2026 World Cup. His campaign began with a 2-2 draw against Japan on June 14.
