Mboko clinches Hong Kong win; Sonmez shocked in Chennai

Third seed Victoria Mboko produced a spirited comeback on Thursday to book her place in the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Tennis Open. The Canadian rallied from 1-4 down in the final set to defeat the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 27 minutes.
Mboko fired eight aces but also hit nine double faults, saving six of 10 break points before closing out the match by sweeping the last five games. She will next face No. 6 seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia, who cruised past China’s Shuai Zhang 6-1, 6-1 in just 51 minutes.
Top seed Belinda Bencic and Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume also progressed with straight-sets victories. Bencic beat China’s Yafan Wang 6-2, 6-2, while Sakatsume defeated local favorite Eudice Chong 6-2, 6-1.
Jiangxi Open (Jiujiang, China)
Third seed Alycia Parks survived a shaky start to overcome Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 and reach the quarterfinals. Despite serving 11 double faults, the American converted six of nine break points to advance in one hour and 38 minutes.
Parks will next face Russia’s Anna Blinkova, who eliminated sixth seed Anna Bondar of Hungary 7-6(3), 7-5. Another seed fell as No. 8 Anastasia Zakharova was beaten 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 by the Czech Republic’s Dominika Salkova. Salkova will meet China’s Zhuoxuan Bai, who edged compatriot Hanyu Guo 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a two-hour, 17-minute battle.
Chennai Open (India)
Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee pulled off the biggest upset of the day, rallying past top seed Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Tararudee converted seven of 13 break chances and capitalized on Sonmez’s five double faults to seal the win.
She will next face Russia’s Polina Iatcenko, who defeated Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa 6-2, 6-3.
Elsewhere, Slovakia’s Mia Pohankova ousted French ninth seed Diane Parry 6-3, 6-4. No. 3 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia, No. 4 Janice Tjen of Indonesia, No. 7 Kimberly Birrell, Australia’s Arina Rodionova, and Taiwan’s Joanna Garland also advanced to the last eight.
