Marsaxlokk edge Żabbar as Mosta Triumph in Relegation Derby

Marsaxlokk and Mosta both claimed vital victories on Wednesday night, each for very different reasons. The Southerners boosted their Top Six ambitions with a hard-fought win over Żabbar St Patrick, while Mosta earned crucial points in their battle near the foot of the table after defeating Naxxar Lions in a derby clash.
At the Centenary Stadium, Marsaxlokk needed a resilient display to overcome a spirited Żabbar side, eventually prevailing 1–0 thanks to a superb strike from Fred Tsoumou on 59 minutes. The powerful forward’s decisive effort secured three valuable points, keeping Marsaxlokk’s hopes of a Top Six finish very much alive.
The victory lifts Marsaxlokk to fifth place on 17 points, one ahead of Birkirkara and three clear of Hibernians. The Southerners will confirm their Top Six qualification if they avoid defeat against Hibernians in their final Opening Round fixture on Saturday.
Mosta triumph in derby against Naxxar Lions
Meanwhile, at the same venue, Mosta struck three times in the final stages to record a 3–0 win over Naxxar Lions, with Emmanuel Prince Chibuzor leading the charge with a brace.
The result was significant for Mosta, not only earning them derby bragging rights but also lifting them above Naxxar and Żabbar St Patrick into ninth place in the standings.
Both sides came into the match level on points and eager to steer clear of the relegation zone. Naxxar started brightly, pressing high and creating several half-chances, with Vitinha and Neil Pace Cocks both testing Mosta goalkeeper David Udoh Akpan, who produced a series of fine saves to keep his team level.
Mosta gradually found their rhythm, as Prince Chibuzor threatened with his pace and strength, setting up Zachary Brincat for a low effort that was comfortably gathered by Matthias Debono.
After the break, Naxxar continued to press, with Firmino striking the crossbar from distance. But against the run of play, Mosta broke the deadlock when Chibuzor pounced in the box to fire low into the corner.
Moments later, Simon Zibo doubled the advantage, rising highest to head home Nathan Agius’s corner. Naxxar’s defence then collapsed under pressure, allowing Chibuzor to capitalise again and seal a deserved 3–0 victory for Mosta.
The win lifts Mosta out of immediate danger, while Naxxar are left to regroup after another frustrating result in their fight for survival.
