Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé has Cristiano Ronaldo’s club record for goals in a calendar year in his sights as Los Blancos prepare to face Celta Vigo in LaLiga at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.

The French forward has already netted 55 goals in 55 matches across all competitions in 2025, just four short of Ronaldo’s 59-goal record set in 2013. With five matches remaining this year, Mbappé has a clear chance to surpass the Portuguese legend and set a new benchmark.

Mbappé’s extraordinary form continued midweek with two brilliant goals and an assist in Real’s 3-0 win over Athletic Club at San Mamés, bringing his LaLiga tally to 16 goals and four assists in 15 games—double the eight goals of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, currently second in the scoring charts.

After a tricky start at Real following his 2024 move from Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappé has been virtually unstoppable since the turn of the year. December offers him further opportunities to extend his tally, with Real facing Manchester City in the Champions League, domestic rivals Sevilla and Alavés in LaLiga, and a Copa del Rey fixture against an as-yet-unknown opponent.

However, his first chance will come against mid-table Celta Vigo on Sunday. Ronaldo’s 2013 record stood unchallenged for over a decade, but Mbappé’s remarkable 2025 campaign has brought him within striking distance.

While chasing personal milestones, Mbappé’s Real Madrid remain in pursuit of LaLiga leaders Barcelona, who hold a one-point advantage following a crucial 3-1 win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.

Barcelona, managed by Hansi Flick, will face fifth-placed Real Betis on Saturday, with key players Raphinha and Pedri returning from injury to strengthen the squad—a potential boost in the title race.

Third-placed Villarreal, five points behind Barcelona with a game in hand, have gone two months unbeaten in LaLiga and travel to Getafe on Saturday. Fourth-placed Atlético, one point behind Villarreal, aim to recover from their Camp Nou defeat when they visit Athletic Club.
