Matthew Paris emerging as potential candidate for Malta FA Presidency

Malta FA Senior Vice-President Matthew Paris is understood to be seriously considering a bid for the presidency of the Malta Football Association in what could develop into one of the most significant leadership contests in Maltese football in recent years.
Although no official announcement has yet been made, sources close to the football administration indicate that Paris is exploring the possibility of contesting the presidency amid growing discussion surrounding the future leadership of the Malta FA.
Paris currently serves as Senior Vice-President of the Malta FA and is regarded as one of the associationโs most experienced football administrators, having occupied executive roles within the governing body for several years. He first became Malta FA vice-president in 2016 and has since strengthened his influence both locally and internationally through his work in football governance.
Over the years, Paris has been involved in a number of strategic projects connected to Maltese football, including governance reforms, football development initiatives and administrative restructuring within the association.
His international profile also continued to rise after he was appointed to FIFAโs Futsal Committee, becoming one of a select group of officials chosen to contribute towards the global development of the sport.
However, Paris may not be the only prominent football administrator considering a presidential bid.
Sources have also indicated that Malta Premier League Chairman Alan Abela is weighing the possibility of throwing his hat into the ring should a contest for the presidency materialise.
Abela has become an influential figure in Maltese football through his leadership role within the Malta Premier League, particularly during a period marked by structural and commercial changes in the domestic game. His possible candidacy would likely add another interesting dimension to any future electoral race.
At present, Bjorn Vassallo remains Malta FA president after securing another term in office in 2024. Nevertheless, speculation regarding the long-term future leadership of the association has continued to intensify in recent months.
While no official campaigns have yet been launched, both Paris and Abela are already being closely linked with a possible future race for the top post in Maltese football.
