Ajax are reportedly exploring a loan move for Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte, according to reports in the Netherlands.

The 24-year-old joined United from Paris Saint-Germain in a €50 million deal in 2024 but has struggled to establish himself as a regular at Old Trafford. Ugarte has started just seven matches this season and has made 16 appearances across all competitions.

According to Voetbal International journalist Tim van Duijn, Ajax have identified the Uruguayan international as a key target as they look to reinforce their midfield. The Amsterdam club is seeking a specialist holding midfielder following Jordan Henderson’s departure last summer, while the loan of Liverpool youngster James McConnell was terminated earlier this month.

Ugarte is understood to be open to a move to Ajax, with regular playing time a priority as he looks to secure his place in Uruguay’s squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup in five months.

Blind alternative

Ajax are also considering a move for former fan favourite Daley Blind as an alternative option. The versatile 35-year-old currently plays for LaLiga side Girona, where his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Blind made 333 appearances for Ajax during his previous spells at the club and would bring experience and leadership to a young squad. The former Netherlands international is also expected to take on a coaching role at Ajax following his retirement.
