Manchester United determined to keep Mainoo Amid exit interest

Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Manchester United has been the subject of growing scrutiny in recent weeks, and the full picture around his situation is now becoming clearer.
The 20-year-old midfielder is understood to feel that he does not fit into the long-term vision of head coach Ruben Amorim, who has yet to hand him a Premier League start this season. That lack of involvement has fuelled uncertainty over his role at Old Trafford.
Chelsea have been monitoring Mainoo’s situation, as previously revealed, and interest extends beyond Stamford Bridge. Napoli are currently leading the race among overseas suitors, with other clubs also attentive to developments.
While a transfer is not imminent, it remains a possibility. United are increasingly frustrated by what they perceive as a lack of patience from the player, particularly given the club’s belief that opportunities will arise in time.
Earlier in the season, there was an expectation within United that Mainoo would commit his future by signing a new contract. However, negotiations have stalled, largely because the midfielder feels he has no clearly defined role while Amorim remains in charge. That view is not universally shared by the club hierarchy.
Mainoo has asked for permission to leave during the January transfer window, but he was informed last week that United have no intention of sanctioning a departure midway through the season. The club’s stance is that the England international should remain patient and take a broader view of his development.
With doubts surrounding Bruno Fernandes’ long-term future, alongside question marks over Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, United believe the pathway will reopen for Mainoo to re-establish himself in the squad after this campaign.
From the player’s perspective, however, that route has been difficult to identify—and perhaps even harder to trust. That frustration has been publicly reflected, with Mainoo’s half-brother recently wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan: “Free Kobbie Mainoo.”
There is a growing perception outside the club that Amorim does not see Mainoo as a natural fit for his tactical system. United sources strongly deny this, but tensions persist as the January window draws closer.
Internally, United are conflicted. While they remain highly rated Mainoo’s talent, there is disappointment over his response to the situation, leading to some discussion about whether allowing him to leave could ultimately be beneficial.
Mainoo was absent from the weekend’s match against Aston Villa due to what was described as a minor injury. Should he hope to revive his standing at Old Trafford, the coming weeks could prove decisive.
With Fernandes currently sidelined—and Amorim having previously suggested Mainoo is his direct competition—the upcoming fixtures present an opportunity. Manchester United face Newcastle United on Boxing Day, and it remains to be seen whether Mainoo will be fit and available for selection.
Ultimately, resolving the situation will require a renewed sense of mutual understanding and respect between player and club.
