Manchester United considering midfield succession plan for Fernandes and Casemiro

Manchester United have identified the need for a succession plan for Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, prompting the club to explore potential replacements for two of their most experienced midfielders.
The duo has been instrumental in United’s resurgence this season, forming a reliable partnership in the heart of midfield that has helped steady the team under Ruben Amorim. Their influence remains vital, but with Fernandes now 31 and Casemiro 33, internal discussions are underway about refreshing the central midfield for the long term.
Amorim places immense trust in both players, yet there is a growing recognition within the club that there is no clear plan for the future once their contributions start to decline. Outside of Harry Maguire, United currently have no senior outfield players over the age of 30, and squad balance is increasingly a focus as recruitment strategies for 2025 take shape.
Youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have yet to fully convince Amorim of their all-round capabilities in central midfield. While both are expected to remain at the club for the remainder of the season, planning for the future is underway as United consider how the squad will evolve.
Currently, United’s lighter schedule—playing just one game per week following the absence from European competition and an early Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town—has eased the physical demands on Fernandes and Casemiro. Behind the scenes, however, the club acknowledges the need for greater depth and increased competition in midfield for next season.
United’s plan is to sign two midfielders across the next two transfer windows. Ideally, one of these recruits would have Premier League experience—or proven quality in English football—to ensure a smoother transition and immediate readiness for the intensity of top-flight football.
Earlier reports suggested that United are unlikely to pursue Carlos Baleba at his £100 million valuation, though Newcastle’s Elliot Anderson remains under assessment despite questions over his fit within Amorim’s tactical setup. Meanwhile, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace remains a high-priority target, with Yehor Yarmoliuk of Brentford also attracting interest. Other overseas options are being monitored, with the shortlist expected to be refined over the next month based on realistic opportunities.
For now, United will continue to rely on Casemiro—who is expected to enter discussions over a potential contract extension—and Fernandes, whose leadership and creative influence remain central to Amorim’s vision for this crucial season.
