Man Utd midfielder Mainoo hopes for move in January following reduced role

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is expected to push for a January loan move, amid growing frustration over limited first-team opportunities.
Mainoo’s chances of regular playing time have not improved as the season has progressed, and sources close to the club anticipate he may push for a move away in search of minutes. United, however, want him to remain focused on working hard and taking opportunities when they come to prove he can claim a consistent spot. Still, the player is reportedly concerned that the season is slipping away.
Club insiders note that United generally prefer to avoid “dry” loan deals, believing short-term moves offer limited long-term value. That stance may face a test if Mainoo’s desire for game time intensifies.
The club also faces decisions elsewhere. Forward Joshua Zirkzee has attracted interest from Roma, who are reportedly weighing a loan deal that could include an option to buy. United will have to consider whether letting him leave could make sense for squad balance.
A potential incoming loan is also on the table. United could look at Conor Gallagher to bolster their midfield, while a forward with top-level experience might be considered if Zirkzee departs.
United’s long-term strategy remains focused on acquiring players capable of contributing over multiple seasons—a plan established before the campaign began. Yet growing interest from other clubs in players like Mainoo could challenge that approach.
Chelsea have reportedly renewed their interest in Mainoo. The player has previously been on Stamford Bridge’s radar, particularly when Alejandro Garnacho moved to London in the summer. While it is unclear whether Mainoo would secure more minutes in Chelsea’s crowded midfield, the Blues are believed to be evaluating cover for the injury-prone Romeo Lavia.
Napoli have also expressed interest. United intend to prioritize their own squad needs, but there is a growing sense that Mainoo’s situation may reach a decisive point soon.
Currently, United are seeking two long-term midfield successors to Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, and there is limited confidence that Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte can step into those roles immediately. Among other options, Carlos Baleba remains expensive despite a recent dip in form, while Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton are considered leading Premier League alternatives.
