Manchester United have secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League, shifting focus to the club’s managerial situation and summer transfer strategy.

A decision on whether Michael Carrick will be appointed as permanent head coach has effectively already been made internally, meaning the remaining matches of the season are unlikely to influence the club’s stance on his long-term future.

Carrick is currently the leading candidate for the role and is understood to believe he has earned the opportunity to continue building on the progress achieved this season.

Under his guidance, United have enjoyed a significant turnaround, successfully meeting their primary objective of returning to Europe’s top competition.

Sources close to the club suggest that Carrick’s strong relationship with the squad and his familiarity with the environment strengthen his case, although Andoni Iraola has also emerged as a potential contender.

This campaign represents a key phase in United’s ongoing rebuild under their current ownership, and the club are now preparing to invest heavily in the upcoming transfer window to maintain that momentum.

Strengthening midfield is expected to be a priority, with United aiming to demonstrate clear ambition in the market.

Elliot Anderson is expected to be a difficult target for Manchester United, with strong competition from Manchester City for the Nottingham Forest midfielder. Meanwhile, Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion remains a key target, and further discussions are expected in the near future.

Interest in Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace has cooled, but João Gomes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United are also under consideration.

United are aiming to recruit two central midfielders, with additional options including Ederson of Atalanta BC, Aurélien Tchouaméni from Real Madrid, and Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP, should favourable opportunities arise in the market.

Defensive reinforcements are also part of the plan, with United monitoring Murillo and Micky van de Ven of Tottenham Hotspur. A move for a full-back is also being considered, with Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal FC among the names to watch, while adding a dynamic wide attacker remains an ideal objective.

However, progress in wide areas will depend on resolving the futures of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, meaning that position is more likely to be addressed later in the transfer window, during July and August.

At this stage, United are also expected to explore potential moves for Iliman Ndiaye of Everton FC and Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig.

While significant spending is anticipated, the club’s immediate priority remains resolving the managerial situation and making a final decision on Michael Carrick as their long-term head coach. Once that is settled, United are expected to move quickly to begin their summer recruitment drive.
